They Killed Cornbread!
After all, it's not every day that we get films that persist in extolling truth and decency even while making a bloody display of the unfairness of life. And judging by the warm-weather fare of the recent past, it isn't likely that this spring and summer will offer too many films that ó like "Cornbread"ócan appeal to youngsters on a wholesome ethical plane while telling a story that bears some resemblance to life, and death, on real city streets. Part urban tragedy, part courtroom melodrama, "Cornbread" is the story of Cornbread Hamilton a black teenage basketball star about to leave his less-than-ideal neighborhood for college and obviously destined for a big-money professional career. The boy, however, is shot down by the police, who are pursuing an apparent psychopath, who has just left a woman all but dead. It's an all-too-familiar case, one in which the patrolmen involved ó one white, one black ó speak of something shiny, perhaps a gun, in the running youngster's hand.
