La civilizacion del espectaculo by Mario Vargas Llosa

This hits hard when read in 2019. Especially his essay on politics, in which he illuminates just how eloquently fucked we are unless we modify what we value as a culture.

I loved the vast majority of this book, but playing devil’s advocate I have to say that portions of it read like an intelligent, well-spoken old man, rambling that certain things were better in the past. Specifically his past. Which is true, he isn’t wrong, but he is also not right. It is all relative.

At no point during the book did Vargas Llosa do the one thing I was hoping he would: consider that there have always been well-spoken, intelligent elders living in the past he is mythologizing as more valuable than our present, and they too mythologized their own past, raging against contemporary works of art as derivative and surface level. The very same art that Vargas Llosa praises as revolutionary and full of interpretive value. And they too were correct, and also very wrong.

On and on until the beginning of time in terrible paradox.

Perhaps what this book really illuminates is that the potential for appreciation, and interpretation of any work of art increases as distance is accumulated, and time is flattened. Nostalgia flavors and primes our perception.

Still, this is one of my favorite reads so far this year. It touches on a lot of topics that are highly relevant to our modern moment, and brings up so many invigorating questions about how we perceive artistic value.
