Quotes about race and ethnicity
Stevenson Under the Palm Trees by Alberto ManguelStevenson Under the Palm Trees is a vivid novella with Robert Louis Stevenson at its centre. Drawing on works produced by Stevenson at the end of his life, Manguel weaves a story about his life on Samoa, a philosophical investigation into morality, storytelling and reality. Manguels story is filled with the echoes of Stevensons work, the most obvious parallel to be drawn being that between the fictional Stevensons relationship with Mr Baker, and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The book follows Stevenson as his life crumbles, reality blurring with fiction, dream and fantasy as he acts in ways he doesnt believe himself.
A constantly recurring idea in the text is that telling a story creates a truth, and this is the overall effect of this piece of writing: a fictional biography that becomes a reality of sorts. Stevenson Under the Palm Trees is a beautifully crafted work that provokes a dialogue about truth, reality and personal responsibility.
I enjoyed this book very much and find it hard to summarise exactly why; there are reams that could be written about it and much to analyse. But its also immensely readable and very short, so even if your preferred reading is non-analytical, Id highly recommend it.

Capitalism knows only one color: that color is green; all else is necessarily subservient to it, hence, race, gender and ethnicity cannot be considered within it. Ethnicity should enrich us; it should make us a unique people in our diversity and not be used to divide us. Every American deserves to live in freedom, to have his or her privacy respected and a chance to go as far as their ability and effort will take them - regardless of race, gender, ethnicity or economic circumstances. Do not ghettoize society by putting people into legal categories of gender, race, ethnicity, language, or other such characteristics. Choose your friends and mates, not by the money in their bank account, creed, ethnicity, or color; instead, choose character, actions, heart, and soul. When we bleed, we bleed the same color.
In spite of the huge diversity in Malaysia in terms of religion, culture, race, ethnicity and so forth, we've really gone very far in developing this country.
