What is brokeback mountain about
Brokeback Mountain by Annie ProulxAnnie Proulx has written some of the most original and brilliant short stories in contemporary literature, and for many readers and reviewers, Brokeback Mountain is her masterpiece.
Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, two ranch hands, come together when theyre working as sheepherder and camp tender one summer on a range above the tree line. At first, sharing an isolated tent, the attraction is casual, inevitable, but something deeper catches them that summer.
Both men work hard, marry, and have kids because thats what cowboys do. But over the course of many years and frequent separations this relationship becomes the most important thing in their lives, and they do anything they can to preserve it.
The New Yorker won the National Magazine Award for Fiction for its publication of Brokeback Mountain, and the story was included in Prize Stories 1998: The O. Henry Awards. In gorgeous and haunting prose, Proulx limns the difficult, dangerous affair between two cowboys that survives everything but the worlds violent intolerance.
The author said she was frustrated with the number of straight men who tried to rewrite the story's ending so that Jack and Ennis stayed together. Annie Proulx has said she regrets writing Brokeback Mountain due to the number of men who have written to her complaining about the story's ending. And it just drives me wild. Proulx said the men writing to her implied that they knew how her characters would behave better than her because of their gender. Those are not their characters.
They were raised on small, poor ranches in opposite corners of the state, Jack Twist in Lightning Flat, up on the Montana border, Ennis del Mar from around Sage, near the Utah line, both high-school drop-out country boys with no prospects, brought up to hard work and privation, both rough-mannered, rough-spoken, inured to the stoic life. Ennis, reared by his older brother and sister after their parents drove off the only curve on Dead Horse Road, leaving them twenty-four dollars in cash and a two-mortgage ranch, applied at age fourteen for a hardship license that let him make the hour-long trip from the ranch to the high school. The pickup was old, no heater, one windshield wiper, and bad tires; when the transmission went, there was no money to fix it. He had wanted to be a sophomore, felt the word carried a kind of distinction, but the truck broke down short of it, pitching him directly into ranch work. That spring, hungry for any job, each had signed up with Farm and Ranch Employment—they came together on paper as herder and camp tender for the same sheep operation north of Signal. The summer range lay above the tree line on Forest Service land on Brokeback Mountain. Neither of them was twenty.
P art of becoming an adult involves accepting that we have no control over what other people think about us. It is an especially difficult lesson to learn for artists, who are hawking a larger portion of themselves in the marketplace than, say, a fishmonger or a mechanic. When the intent of a poet or sculptor is misunderstood by an audience, it may seem to the injured party that something in themselves is being mangled also. That would explain the chagrin with which the writer Annie Proulx has responded to reactions to her short story Brokeback Mountain, about the secret year love affair between Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar, two men who meet while herding sheep in s Wyoming. Hers is the frustration of the control freak diagnosing unfairness in any outcome not to her liking, be it a wrongly attributed trophy or an unfathomable response. The virtues of Brokeback Mountain remain constant whether it wins a hundred awards or none at all.
