The song is best known for being played during the opening and closing credits of the John Hughes film The Breakfast Club. It was written and composed by producer Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff, a guitarist and songwriter from the Nina Hagen band. According to frontman Jim Kerr , the band was reluctant to record the song as they felt they should only record their own material, relenting after persuasion from Kerr's wife at the time, Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders , and a phone call from Forsey in which he expressed his admiration for the band.

It was the mids and we were on the verge of making it big all over the world, having just released Sparkle in the Rain. However, as with many UK bands, the US was proving tough to crack. Then our record company came to us with an idea. The director John Hughes was making a movie called The Breakfast Club , and they thought it would be a great vehicle for their bands. Nah, we write our own songs. But my wife at the time, Chrissie [Hynde], who was older and wiser, kept badgering me. How about I just spend a couple of days with you?

It was written and composed by producer Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff, a guitarist and songwriter from the Nina Hagen band. The song is best known for being played during the opening Forsey's demo and closing Simple Minds' recording credits of the John Hughes film The Breakfast Club. It also appeared in the end titles of the romantic comedy spoof Not Another Teen Movie The song was also used in the closing of The Handmaid's Tale ' s second episode. Both were Simple Minds fans and wrote the song with the band in mind. According to Simple Minds frontman Jim Kerr , the band was reluctant to record the song, as they felt they should only record their own material.
