BabyGirl (full movie)

Teen movies, teen romance movies, and anything involving a retro American high school will always be our favourite genre of film. Chuck a jock and an outcast who have a blossoming romance oh hey She's All That in our direction or some teenage girls with an attitude problem forever in our hearts, Mean Girls , and we'll be happy.

Mae Whitman has oodles of charm as the down-to-earth lead of this harmlessly predictable high school comedy. But a message of acceptance wins out in the end. To deal with her intense crushes, Lara Jean Lana Condor writes secret love letters to the boys she lusts after, which no one is ever meant to see. Of course, these letters end up being sent out and Lara Jean must deal with her feelings, and the implications of the letters, head on. This Netflix Original movie, based on the book of the same name by Jenny Han, has been praised by all corners of the internet, especially for the performances of Lana Condor and Noah Centineo, who plays love interest Peter Kavinsky.

That's true, as long as the viewer is a comfortably wealthy, middle-class American teenager who lives in a spacious house in a friendly, trouble-free neighbourhood with his own car and carefree parents. It's reality, but very much a reality with an asterisk made of privilege. This privilege applies to the American high school movie in general. These are worlds populated entirely by obscenely attractive people arranging themselves in social cliques around cafeteria tables. Even films like American Pie , a couple of rungs down the social ladder from the likes of Mean Girls or Heathers , are explicitly set in schools near the top of the social strata. There's coolness and style lurking just outside of the central narrative.

Cheerleaders, eating lunch in the loo, going to prom— your secondary school was not like this Why were their cafeteria tribes so clearly defined? You and your friends were way too busy trying to stomach that lumpy mash to worry about being at the right table…. And why did all the drama happen in those corridors? While your PE lesson consisted of navy shorts, patchy grass and a flat netball, these glitzy American girls were wearing glittery lycra, screaming animal names, and throwing people in the air while doing the splits. Your friends in year 10 did NOT look like this. These kids looked more like they should have proper careers and homes… and their own kids.
