Hospitality in the Bible

Entertaining can be a chore with all that goes into it, but the benefits outweigh the pains. Let us look into scripture and see what God says about hospitality.

King James Bible

What does the Bible say about? Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.

President Trump has also proposed that Mexican goods be taxed at the rate of 20 percent to provide funds for building the wall. For Christians, the questions about building the border wall or permitting immigrants and refugees into the United States involve a host of associated considerations not just about the specifics of immigration law, the economics of cheap labor coming across the border or potential terrorist threats. And I, like all Christians, look to the Bible for guidance when asking about how to best welcome the stranger.

People are becoming much more reliant on themselves. I realize now that I am older that I loved going to her house so much because of her hospitality. She always fed us three square meals a day and she let us use her home as if it were our own. Entertaining can be a chore with all that goes into it, but the benefits outweigh the pains. Let us look into scripture and see what God says about hospitality. Most of the time people will neither show joy nor gladness when they are doing something simply out of duty.

An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it. He answered, "You shall not kill them. Would you kill those you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master. And the marauding bands of Arameans did not come again into the land of Israel.

This article is part of the 10 Things You Should Know series. Faithful Christians are—and have always been—a strange minority in a hostile world. Redeemed by Christ, we have lost our old lives—and with our lives, we have left behind the history, identity, and people who once claimed us. Conversion starts with the sacrifice of what once was, and the gospel provides for what we have relinquished through hospitality. Hospitality is the ground zero of the Christian life.
