Lights retention scale manual 2006 edition
Lights Retention Scale Manual, Revised 1998 Ed by Wayne LightThe LRS is a powerful tool that assists school professionals in making sensitive and often difficult decisions about promoting or retaining a child. Because it contains one of the most comprehensive literature reviews of grade retention ever compiled, it helps educators better understand the pros and cons of grade retention. It also assures parents that their decision is based on thoughtful, professional findings. The Lights Scale, an easy-to-use recording form, identifies 19 specific areas of concern, including the childs age and the age(s) of siblings, the childs emotional maturity, life experiences, level of intelligence, behavior, and more. When its time to explain to parents the basis for your decision, use the handy Lights Parent Guide, which includes a concise statement of important factors used in decision-making. Spanish translations of the Lights Recording Form and Parent Guide are useful when working with Spanish-speaking parents.

Unfortunately, we sometimes jump into retention as the answer when a more targeted and studied response would offer better results. By completing the LRS, student age, learning difficulties, behavior, family characteristics, attendance, motivation, and other factors are part of the decision about retention. I should give full disclosure here, and say that I think retention is an ineffective practice because of the lack of supporting research. In my experience, grade-level skills are not so specific, clearly defined, or easy to measure. Children do not always fit neatly into specific grade levels. Sometimes I learn things I missed or that became relevant to me later in life. The same thing happens with children.
