The five-time All-Ireland champion's book isn't a traditional sports story, focusing more on McMahon's upbringing in Ballymun, and the death of his brother from drug use. This is the third year in-a-row that a GAA book has claimed the Eir Sport prize, with efforts from John Leonard and Kieran Donaghy winning in and respectively. Sign Up. This William Hill-shortlisted book tells his life story with a particular focus on his long and miraculous road to recovery. While football fans get endless exposure to millionaire Premier League players, the vast majority of aspiring stars end up seeing their dreams go unfulfilled.

It was a difficult task for the judging panel to narrow it down to three contenders this year. This shortlist reflects a diversity of writing styles and subject matters.
